The longest day of the year falls on June 20, bringing warmer temperatures and more sunlight. Flowers are blooming, there's plenty to harvest in the vegetable garden, and controlling rampant plants is a priority - especially weeds! In the meantime, discover a comprehensive list of jobs you can do in your flower garden in June.

1. Unhook hanging baskets and containers that continue to grow in the greenhouse and move them into their final positions. If your hanging basket plants get leggy, cut off the excess to encourage bushy new growth.

2. Continue to thin out bushes of hardy annuals if they become overcrowded.

3. Lift out clumps of snowdrops and bluebells and divide them as soon as the leaves begin to yellow.

4. Lift out and divide overcrowded clumps of bulbs and tubers.

5. Wait until the foliage on the bulbs falls off on its own before pruning.

6. Cut the tops off fuchsias to encourage bushy growth and more flowers.

7. Start picking sweet peas as soon as they flower to encourage more blooms.

8. Remove the heads of your roses if they are repeat flowering species. Otherwise, leave the seed heads on for decoration.

9. Cut back oriental poppies after they have bloomed. Cut them off near the ground to stimulate leaf sprouting.

10. Stake up tall-growing perennials to prevent wind damage.

11. As new shoots grow, use soft ties to secure climbers such as honeysuckle and clematis to their supports.

12. Cut out overcrowded or dead shoots of evergreen clematis as soon as they finish flowering to maintain good form.

13. Towards the end of June, when your hardy geraniums have finished flowering, cut them back to encourage new leaves and flowers.

14. Harvest the flower heads from your lavender plants to use in baking, crafts or as a garnish for your meals.
